Storytelling

Going Home

Go Local Glasgow and West Scotland

(Sun 4 Oct: 3pm)

Inspired by a letter written from the front line of the First World War, this moving storytelling performance shares the words of Robert Carroll to his beloved, recalling with lyrical tenderness the vast Canadian Prairies, a place where he had built a home and dreamed of returning. Yet beneath his hopeful words lies an unspoken sense of foreboding. As Robert's story unfolds, it invites us to reflect on what it truly means to belong. Is finding a place to lay our hearts a right or a privilege? And how many of us are ever able to call a place home?

Storyteller Katie Proven brings her great-grandfather's remarkable letter to life, weaving it with Indigenous Canadian folk tales, myths, and legends. The result is a rich tapestry of landscape, and story—a poignant exploration of home, loss, belonging, and the enduring power of hope.

At Mugdock Country Park Theatre, Craigallian Road, Milngavie, G62 8EL.

This year’s Festival explores the rich relationship between storytelling and the natural world through our theme Bird and Beast. Alongside a vibrant programme at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh, storytellers across Scotland bring these tales to life this autumn through the Go Local programme. We proudly celebrate Scotland’s cèilidh tradition with an invitation into the story circle, extending a warm welcome to international guests who share their stories, traditions and contemporary practices alongside Scotland’s own world-class talent. Join us for some unforgettable tales and moments that bring us closer to nature, as we follow the trail of footprints and feathers and let our imagination take flight.
