Dr Lee Raye is an Associate Lecturer at the Open University and a Research Officer at Bangor University. Their new book Creatures of Story and Song: Tracing Britain’s Lost Species pieces together old stories and poems to remember a time when the countryside was wilder. Lee will talk about the St Kilda tradition of giving your sweetheart a great auk; tell Highland legends of wild boar and wolves; explain why the red kite was a disgraceful bird, and why Scotland’s pine trees are so exceptional; and lots more besides!.

This year’s Festival explores the rich relationship between storytelling and the natural world through our theme Bird and Beast. Alongside a vibrant programme at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh, storytellers across Scotland bring these tales to life this autumn through the Go Local programme.
