Gira - Songs for the Orishas

Brazilian artists Giulia Drummond and Mario Caribé present a ritualistic performance of music and stories of the Orishas, Yoruba deities who personify the forces of nature and timeless human archetypes. The cult of the Orishas was brought to Brazil by the enslaved Yoruba people and it endured all the oppression and violence of slavery. These spiritual traditions are filled with joy and music: chanting, drumming, dancing. It’s the music that conducts each stage of a ritual. And so this performance is designed with a ritualistic structure, following a traditional xirê - sequence in which the Orishas are saluted, sung and danced in the Gira.

This year’s Festival explores the rich relationship between storytelling and the natural world through our theme Bird and Beast. Alongside a vibrant programme at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh, storytellers across Scotland bring these tales to life this autumn through the Go Local programme. We proudly celebrate Scotland’s cèilidh tradition with an invitation into the story circle, extending a warm welcome to international guests who share their stories, traditions and contemporary practices alongside Scotland’s own world-class talent. Join us for some unforgettable tales and moments that bring us closer to nature, as we follow the trail of footprints and feathers and let our imagination take flight.
